Hi folks, Thanks to those who could make it up to the farm for a
visit. It's terrific to have the opportunity not only to meet new
folks but also to explain bits and pieces of how we do what we do.
Hopefully it was rewarding for those who made the journey. If you
couldn't make it, stay in touch about our annual fall farm party,
usually mid October on a Saturday...
Otherwise in the news at
the farm, it's harvest, harvest, harvest. And it looks like maybe the
end of the tomatoes. I really wish they would last longer, but I have
no control over the weather. A wet season is a short season for
tomatoes. Hopefully you've had your fill. (I understand this will
probably never be the case!) Other than harvesting, it's time to
spread compost for next season, plant cover crops for soil building,
and plow down old crops to make ready for a year of cover. We are
fortunate to have enough open land now that we can dedicate half to
long term cover crops every year, and the other to short term cover
crops and vegetables. What's a "cover crop?"
you may ask... It's basically a crop of grasses and legumes which grow
and decompose as carbon on the soil surface to become humus, which adds
to soil tilth and fertility. This is our way of not only letting the
soil rest, but of building and improving it for future generations. As biological farmers we are largely dependant on the act of resting land and growing soil building crops. It's such a simple gift to give back to the land that gives so much to us! Add compost and ammendments to the mix and we're really giving back... Here's the harvest:
