Labor Day at the farm is just about like any other day (much like other summer holidays - Memorial Day,
July 4th). Mondays are especially busy for us as we are working all
day to bring in the harvest for Tuesday. Thankfully, Aliyah will be
back from her vacation. If we're lucky I'll get the farm crew to quit
at an early 5 o'clock to join in a "Labor" Day potluck. This is a
gathering for moms and families to share their birth stories and share
support for the small minority of us who still birth our babies at
home. While not an official farm event I thought I would mention it in
honor of new mom, Bernie DeLeo, our NYC coordinator.
In light
of non-official farm business.... you may wonder what the farmer's
weekend is like? Well after 2 days of getting up at 4:30, and going to
2 markets, farmer comes home and has a little nap. When Dan got up he
took Bea to the farm to wrap up the chores for the day and found that
the cows had gotten out. Patches is in heat and her pal Coco is all
wild to be free & on the loose. In the process of wrangling them
back to the barn, Dan was stung in the face twice by wasps. Ouch! Talk
about adding insult to injury, he his quite sensitive to stings and his
face swelled up pretty quickly. Needless to say he ate dinner and was
in bed by 8:30.
Ah, but today is another day and hopefully a nice, slow mellow one. Happy Labor Day. Here's the harvest: tomatoes, cukes, zukes, onions, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, acorn squash, swiss chard, parsley.
