FAQs

Q: I'm interested in having one or more of the optional shares but not the vegetables. Can I sign up for those?

A: No, only members who have bought veggie shares are eligible to purchase optional shares.

Q: I'm not sure I can tolerate raw milk so I'm wary of committing to a milk share. What should I do?

A: The best thing is to request a one time trial for either a 1/2 gallon or full gallon at the start of the season. Preferably, you should make this request before the season begins so you can receive it on the first distribution. You will need to bring payment with you to the site to collect. Then, if you decide to continue the share, contact Bernie and your trial payment will be deducted from the seasonal share price.

Q: I have limited resources, do you offer any payment plans?

A: After receiving a deposit, we allow members to pay their balance in 2 monthly installments. See membership form for more details. If you need further consideration, please contact Bernie.

Q: What if I can't pick up my share?

A: You can have a friend or neighbor pick up your share for you any time. Simply have your substitute state your name when they check in at the site. The site coordinator will show them the drill but please remember to tell your sub to bring their own bags as we do not provide bags for anyone; members or substitutes. If you can't find anyone to pick up your share, don't worry! Your produce will be donated to The Westside Campaign Against Hunger.

Q: I work until after six so I canąt volunteer. Will I still be able to join?

A: There are plenty of other jobs that people can do from home, so we would ask you to contribute in that way. It's best if you contact Bernie to see if there is an opportunity to work something out before you join. If there isn't a way for you to contribute off site, you must pay a fee of $50.00.

Q: I canąt have night shades because of a medical condition. Can I get something else instead?

A: The CSA is as economical as it is because all members get the same share of the farm's produce every week. It isn't like a grocery store where you choose what you want. However, we do have an exchange bin at the site each week where members can put things they don't want and take something else they do want if it's in there, but other than that, we recommend giving your nightshades to a friend or neighbor!

Q: Is Chubby Bunny produce Certified Organic?

A: Our veggies from Dan and Tracy Hayhurst are grown using organic and sustainable farming methods. Because they are a small farm, they are able to use labor intensive pest management and crop rotation techniques. They do not use genetically modified seeds, synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Certification would not be cost effective for them, nor is it necessary. Hepworth Farms, our fruit suppliers use Integrative Pest Management.

Q: What happens to the produce that is left over?

A: All unclaimed items are donated to the Westside Campaign Against Hunger, the largest food pantry in NYC serving over 34,000 families last year.

Q: I'm not sure if I'll still be in NYC when the season starts but want to be sure I don't get shut out. What should I do?

A: Our recommendation is you join as soon as you can to ensure membership. If, before the season begins, you can't fulfill your commitment because your moving away or something of the sort, we will refund your payment (in full or prorated depending on when you leave) assuming we can find a replacement. The same holds true if you need to leave us midseason. Although not 100% guaranteed, it's pretty much 99.9% guaranteed as each year we always have a VERY long waitlist with folks eager to participate.
