As Labor Day
approaches, things are already changing at the farm and transitioning
into the fall. Dan has already plowed down most of the crops that we're
done with - old plantings of summer squash, lettuce, sweet corn, etc. He's also been plowing in the cover crops that
we let grow this year, as part of a lengthy process of breaking down
their residue so the ground will be ready for next spring. So it
already appears that much of the farm is on it's way to bed for the
season, although that really isn't the case. There is still much to be
done before that happens. We'll be taking soil tests to check in on how
are fields are doing and so we can plan how to ammend them this fall or
in the spring. We'll also be planting new cover crops in sections that were in vegetables this year.
Of course there is still tons of food out in the fields and soon we'll start bringing in bulk crops like potatoes, carrots, etc.
This week the harvest is: zukes, cukes, eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, melons?, kale, lettuce, garlic, basil, carrots.
