Everything is growing gangbusters out in the fields. Tomatoes and peas have both been trellised several
times. The potatoes and eggplants are flowering. The corn is tassling.
Harvest is already taking up most mornings except Wednesday. Dan and
the crew have been harvesting zucchinis, beets, cabbages and other
bulky things the day before CSA distribution and greens early in the
morning on Tuesdays and Fridays. With harvesting taking so much time
and our apprentices off for the afternoon to attend their CRAFT (Collaborative Regional Alliance for
Farming Training) meeting, Dan is sometimes left scratching his head
over how to get the rest of the field work done.
It makes for long days. These are the real dog days of summer. The fall seeding of carrots needs to be
flame weeded before they germinate, there’s a sheep on the loose, it’s
already 6:00 and you’re emotional wife is about to crack up over
weaning your daughter and plan the perfect birthday for a 2 year
old…. And a newsletter needs to be written.
Here’s the harvest: cilantro, kale, squash, lettuce, beets, onions, komatsuna, cabbage.
