When you are really tied to the
land you are also really tied to the weather and are acutely aware of
the great disparity of rain fall when thunderstorms blow through or
should I say, around. Last week found us glued to the weather forecast
searching for news of rain – wishing if we searched hard enough rain
clouds would appear on the map. Many of the storms passed us
while surrounding towns got dumped on. Finally by Thursday we did
get a quick storm, yielding sadly about ¼ of an inch. Then when there
was no rain at all in the forecast we found ourselves with a nice
steady rain Saturday night. Sometimes it takes setting up a make
shift overhead irrigation system over the potatoes (a sprinkler on a
ladder) to get a little rain sent your way.
This week’s harvest: lettuce, chard, turnips, zucchini, scallions, basil, kohlrabi
